The idea to present the stories of the Maier family members who survived the Holocaust came about in 2019 during the launch of the exhibition Interrupted Lives: Seeking Refuge During the Holocaust: The Story of Ruth Maier at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The use of the symbol of the ark in the title of our exhibition refers to situations where, as in the biblical story of Noah, some managed to escape impending destruction. The mosaic of the fates of four generations of this family represents a microcosm of European memory over the last two centuries.
The exhibition begins with a remembrance of Šimon and Jenny Maier (1), who purchased house no. 16 in Žarošice. With the exception of Ludvík Maier, who died in 1933, their children's generation (2-8) fell victim to the Holocaust. The following generation also suffered persecution by the Nazi regime in their youth. The names of half of them, including Ruth Maier, are therefore included in the solemn family list of victims (9-14). We devote the most space to the six survivors (15-20), with their miraculous stories of rescue behind them and the invisible burden of life ahead of them. At the end of the exhibition, we commemorate British journalist Clare Hollingworth, who helped save one of Šimon Maier's grandsons and many other Czech refugees from Nazism.
